M3- Order and Proportion Design Activity Part 1

"Learning Sketchup"

Purpose:

In this exercise you will have access to SketchUp, watch a series of video tutorials to learn the program, and practice what you've learned to create a model in SketchUp.  This assignment will prepare you to create a new digital version of the model you completed in M2 as well as give you practice in applying the organizational strategies from the readings in M3.

Resources:

Refer to M3- Order and Proportion Module Resources

In this resource you will find information on the Organizational Strategies AND a STEP BY STEP tutorial for learning SketchUP.

Task:

Step 1- Read all resources related to Order and Proportion found on M3- Order and Proportion Module Resources

Step 2- Watch all video tutorials to learn SketchUp on M3- Order and Proportion Module Resources  While you watch, be sure to actively take notes in your sketchbook to remind yourself what each tool does and how to use it.  Open up SketchUp on your computer as you watch, pause the video, and try out the tool as you watch the tutorial.

Step 3- Once you think you have a few tools under your belt begin creating a simple massing model of your M1 assignment to scale. The virtual model should respect the 8"x8"x8" parameters.

Step 4- Once you've created a digital model of your M1 assignment make a copy of it and place it next to your digital model.

Step 5- Using the copy of you M1 digital model "modify" it to represent your M2 assignment.  Do NOT start over!  It is much easier and less work to modify the SketchUp model then to build a brand new one.

Step 6 - Within your modeling space you should have a scaled digital model of your M1 Massing Model and your M2 Spatial Model

Deliverables:

A single 4-page 8.5x11 PDF with the following (submitted digitally as directed in studio):

(1) Perspective view "export" (NOT a screen shot!) of the M1 model on an 8 1/2 x 11 page size in PDF

(1) Iso view "export" (NOT a screen shot!) of the M1 model on an 8 1/2 x 11 page size in PDF

(1) Perspective view "export" (NOT a screen shot!) of the M2 model on an 8 1/2 x 11 page size in PDF

(1) Iso view "export" (NOT a screen shot!) of the M2 model on an 8 1/2 x 11 page size in PDF
