M2- Spatial Boundaries Design Assignment

Purpose:

In this exercise, you will demonstrate your knowledge from the lectures and readings by transforming parts of your previous assignment into a model which addresses an elevated plane, overhead plane, L-shaped planes, U- shaped planes, closure, openings, degree of enclosure, and light and view.  You will also begin to address your design in relation to an existing site condition.  This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to practice your analog drawing, sketching, and modeling skills, respond to a site, present your design, and integrate your knowledge of new architectural concepts.

Task:

Summary: Using your “Massing Model” from assignment M1 begin to conceptualize a spatial model using horizontal and vertical elements.  From the lecture and reading use the ideas of the elevated plane, overhead plane, L-shaped planes, U- shaped planes, closure, openings, degree of enclosure, light, and view. The composition of the project is limited to a boundary of an 8-inch cube.  Meaning that the composition cannot exceed 8 inches wide x 8 inches long x 8 inches tall.  The object you create must respond to the given site and its characteristics; however, you may begin to alter the site.  Meaning the site is now a part of your composition and it should be considered as you iterate your design.  Does the site have a depressed plane?  Does the site have a raised plane or platform?  The composition of the model and the site will result in a "spatial model" for Assignment M2-Spatial Boundaries Design Assignment.

Step 1- Consider the M1 Assignment you have completed.  Use your sketchbook and work completed in class to start conceptualizing this model using the concepts of the base plane, overhead plane, and vertical plane.  Create a minimum of (3) sketches in your sketchbook to synthesize your ideas.

Step 2- Create a three-dimensional object using cardboard that is spatial in nature and uses planes to define its form.  Can you see through it?  Can you imagine moving through it?  Be sure to stay within the boundaries of the 8” cube.

Step 3- Create orthographic final drawings of your 8"x8"x8" composition.  Be sure to carefully consider where you will "cut" the plan and section based on the feedback you have received in class.  The intent is to show space in these drawings. The following drawings will be drawn on the following sheets using micron pens:

Sheet 1: floor plan of your model (horizontal section)

Sheet 2: section of your model (vertical section)

Sheet 3:  elevation of the front view

Sheet 4:  elevation of the right view

Sheet 5:  elevation of the left view

Sheet 6:  elevation of the rear view

Sheet 7:  Top view

  • The drawings must have 3 different line weights of varying sizes to indicate “line weight”.

1) darkest for rendering of the surfaces/edges closest to your view,

2) not as dark for surfaces /edges further away from view and

3) a light dashed line representing hidden edges and planes.

4) use B pencil to  "poche" cut planes in the floor plan and section on the back of the paper

Deliverables:

A single 11-page 8.5x11 PDF with the following (submitted digitally as directed in studio):

(7) scanned and well composed ink on paper, orthographic drawings
