Study Tips for Success

Taking Notes

We will be using our sketchbook for specific assignment work, but I also suggest that you use your sketchbook to take notes, jot down concepts, and even do small sketches and diagrams of what you are seeing and learning as you go along.  This course focuses on big picture concepts and how to apply them in actual creative projects.  You should expect to encounter a lot of new and unfamiliar vocabulary as you begin to delve more deeply into the subject.  Most importantly, architecture and design are primarily visual arts and as such, much of what you need to understand in this course can be best described through drawings, diagrams and sketches.

There is pretty good research that demonstrates the advantages of note taking and doodling by hand when you are trying to absorb knowledge as opposed to produce knowledge.  The following short and engaging video explains that further.  I also like that the speaker talks passionately about the design of the pencils and sharpeners he loves which compels him to constantly write down notes and observations.  This is an example of how sometimes simple designs can really support creative acts.
